Building Healthier, More Resilient Communities.
For too long, Des Moines has put the interests of corporate polluters over those of everyday families. Pollution from industry and the threat of climate change endanger our health, our livelihoods, and our communities. I will protect Iowans by finally making investments in clean air and clean water to build healthier communities across our state.
At the statehouse, I will:
Improve Water Quality
Fund practices that improve water quality in our state, including the infrastructure to deploy those funds as cost-effectively as possible, such as restoring the Iowa DNR and covering the costs of local watershed coordinators to work directly with farmers to implement practices.
Address Iowa’s Sky-High Cancer Rates
Iowa has a growing cancer crisis that is touching families in every corner of our state. We have the nation’s second-highest rates of new cancer cases, and we have the dubious distinction of having the fastest-growing rates in the country. We need to have a full picture of all risk factors—from our water and air, to smoking, diet, and exercise—for us to make progress on this critical challenge.
Invest in Natural Infrastructure
Prioritize community resilience by investing in natural infrastructure solutions, including trees, wetlands, parks, and more that make our communities better places to live while protecting our health from extreme heat, flooding, and pollution.
Lower Utility Bills
Lower utility bills by promoting the rapid deployment of low-cost clean energy and ensuring our utilities plan for the future to lower costs to customers and keep our electricity grid reliable.
Establish Resilience Hubs
Work with partners to help establish community resilience hubs in our cities and small towns so that every Iowan knows they have a safe place with electricity and running water to go to when disaster strikes.
